Monitors a host of energy and nuclear issues from a public interest perspective

The ship is believed to be carrying highly radioactive research reactor spent fuel from research reactors in Greece and Portugal and perhaps from other countries as well (Italy, Israel?). The ship could arrive any time at a military dock up the Cooper River. The spent fuel is expected to be promptly off loaded and transported to the Savannah River Site for storage in the L-Basin.
The spent fuel from the GRR-1 in Greece is most likely low-enriched uranium as highly enriched uranium was removed before the Athens Olympics. So why is it coming to SRS if there is no proliferation concern)? The RPI reactor in Portugal stopped using HEU years ago so is this a last shipment of HEU fuel or is it LEU? DOE should clarify details after the ship’s arrival.
