The United States and Canada have concluded a multi-year campaign to dump liquid high-level nuclear waste on the Savannah River Site. But indications are that more dumping from Canada is being considered.

The liquid high-level nuclear waste in question, which contained highly enriched uranium (HEU), was shipped from the Chalk River Lab in Ontario to SRS, where the material evidently has been processed through the H-Canyon reprocessing plant into the SRS waste tanks. It is unknown how much, if any, of the HEU was removed.

Now, it appears that more shipments of waste from Canada to SRS, possibly in the form of grouted HLW at Chalk River, which will be loudly opposed, or spent NRU or Slowpoke reactor spent fuel, are being considered. SRS Watch is filing a Freedom of Information Act request, dated January 21, 2021, for the “memorandum of understanding” between the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd for the MOU. See last sentence in this January 18, 2021 article about the MOU: Repatriation of HEU from Canada to US – “In October, AECL and NNSA signed a memorandum of understanding to enable more effective collaboration in the areas of nuclear safety and security and are exploring the repatriation of additional HEU and other materials over the next several years.”
