If you track operations of the aged H-Canyon reprocessing plant at SRS – the last defense or commercial reprocessing plant in the US – you know that SRS and contractors are as a strict rule always shopping around for more work to keep the taxpayer money flowing to operation of the facility (by contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions).

Now, H-Canyon boosters are looking at processing research reactor spent fuels that earlier were said not to be reprocessable in H-Canyon.  But they may have to settle for lab-scale operations, with damaged fuel then dumped into the waste  tanks.
