“Plutonium for Energy? Explaining the Global Decline of MOX”
“The Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Project is pleased to announce publication of its new open-access book: Plutonium for Energy? Explaining the Global Decline of MOX. Based on a year-long study – including field-research in all seven countries that have commercially produced or used MOX fuel for thermal reactors – the book details how and why such recycling has proved problematic due to plutonium’s three inherent downsides: safety, security, and expense. Five of the seven countries have already decided to phase out thermal MOX fuel. Equally significant, five of the six facilities worldwide for commercial production of such fuel have closed prematurely. The book offers important lessons for countries that are considering initiating or expanding the recycling of plutonium for energy, whether using thermal MOX or alternative technologies such as pyroprocessing and fast reactors.”
