Well, some things in life are predictable. The US nuclear industry is seeking relief that goes far beyond immediate COVID-19 impacts.
In addition to seeking help for the floundering Votgle reactor construction project in Georgia, the Nuclear Energy Institute wants us taxpayers to support “near-term investments in the operation and maintenance of nuclear power reactors [that] will ensure their availability to provide around-the-clock electricity for up to 24 months at a time.”
Headings in the NEI letter to the Secretary of the Treasury Mnuchin and gadfly Larry Kudlow include:
Enabling essential support for nuclear infrastructure
Provide grants for COVID-19-related paid leave
Incentivize investments in resilient nuclear generation
Provide temporary regulatory fee relief
