Draft recommendation “Oppose Receipt of German SNF for Treatment and Storage in the U.S.” – linked here
Watch for the pro-dumping members of the CAB, who front for those seeking to make a handsome profit off the deal, to try tricks to delay the vote. At the July CAB meeting, they got the recommendation sent balk to committee for yet more discussion, where a larger gathering of the public spoke up against the deal. We assume that this time that those backing the dumping will fail to halt a vote.
As DOE tried to hide what was going on, SRS Watch alerted the public about this scheme in 2013. It’s been clear all along that the scheme has been drive by those seeking to make a profit off nuclear dumping. Even the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration, in a document obtained by SRS Watch under a Freedom of information Act request, confirmed that there is no nuclear non-proliferation reason for the import. Update: SRS admits on September 25 that the “Environmental Assessment” on the import and dumping of the German spent fuel has been delayed yet again…delays are now over a year – see update on SRS environmental documents here
“On January 25, 2016, DOE published a Notice of Availability (NOA) in the Federal Register for a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze the potential environmental impacts from a proposed project to accept spent nuclear fuel from the Federal Republic of Germany at SRS for processing and disposition (Draft Spent Nuclear Fuel from Germany EA). This spent nuclear fuel is composed of kernels containing thorium and U.S.-origin highly enriched uranium embedded in small graphite spheres that were irradiated in nuclear reactors used for research and development purposes. DOE held a public meeting on February 4, 2016 at the North Augusta Community Center to accept public comments on the Draft Spent Nuclear Fuel from Germany EA. The public comment period commenced with the issuance of the NOA to remain open for 45 days. The comment period was originally scheduled to end on March 11, 2016 as noted in the January 25 NOA. DOE received several requests from the public to extend the public comment period. Upon evaluating those requests, DOE extended the public comment period 2 weeks through March 25, 2016. A date for issuance of the final EA was not available at the time this status report was prepared.”
