SRS Watch has submitted a series of comments on DOE’s proposal to “repurpose” the abandoned MOX building at SRS into a “Plutonium Bomb Plant” – for two documents under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Two of the key comments by SRS Watch are here:

Congress has not authorized or funded the Plutonium Bomb Plant at SRS, to make 50 or more plutonium “pits” for a new nuclear weapons, so the PBP part of the documents may be moot if Congress does not allow that proposal to go forward. Deliberations on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 are beginning and what the House-Senate “conference committee” decides will determine the fate of the PBP. SRS Watch supports the House position, which does not authorize or fund the PBP.
SRS Watch has also requested that the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration prepare a “non-proliferation risk assessment” of making new pits for a new, provocative nuclear warhead (W87-1-like) and include this in the NEPPA record. Will NNSA bother to respond to this formal request?
