Key activities in South Carolina keep the state at the heart of the nuclear weapons arms race.
Read the article “Still Building Bombs in South Carolina” in the Fall 2022 edition of the Nuclear Watch Tower – newsletter of the NGO Nuclear Watch South – by SRS Watch director Tom Clements about plutonium “pit” production at SRS, tritium processing at SRS and fabrication of tritium rods at the Westinghouse commercial nuclear fuel plant in Columbia, SC – see page 9:

“Building Bombs” as a 1990 documentary film about the the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site and its role in the Cold War – by producing plutonium and tritium for U.S. nuclear weapons – and associated nuclear waste production; it was nominated for an Academy Award. At the time, we sponsored showings of the film in South Carolina and Georgia.
The U.S. should present a bold plan for nuclear disarmament, terminate plans for new plutonium “pit” facilities at SRS and Los Alamos National lab – for new nuclear warheads – and renounce any threats of nuclear war or preparation for it (which is now U.S. policy).
