“Occurrence Report” for radioactive contamination in a “clean area” of the SRS high-level waste vitrification plant (Defense Waste Process Facility)
On October 22, 2019, during routine monthly surveys in the Radiological Protection Department (RPD) office in Building 210-S, personnel discovered 180,000 disintegrations per minute beta/gamma in an area about 1-centimeter square. The spot was near the center of room number 8. No Alpha was detected, and the contamination was not transferrable. Room 8 is designated as a clean area. The RPD office area was secured, and additional facility surveys were performed. Personnel who had entered the area where the contamination was found were monitored on an ARGOS personal contamination monitor. No personnel contamination was identified.
The Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) is in a DOE approved response plan for the Chemical Process Cell (CPC) Purge system. Radiological Protection Department (RPD) personnel are performing routine surveys.
