August 9th Hiroshima/Nagasaki 75th anniversary video commemoration by the local Columbia Friends Meeting (Quakers), Columbia, SC: “Peace Now: Clean Up, Not Build Up at Savannah River Site” (concerning the misguided, unjustified plans for a plutonium pit plant at SRS, at the heart of a new nuclear arms race.)
August 9, 2:55-3:10 p.m. EDT, and for a host of other activities nation-wide, register here: https://www.hiroshimanagasaki75.org/events
“The documentary film short asks viewers to hold onto visions of peace and stand against nuclear proliferation. Peace Now: Clean Up, Not Build Up at Savannah River Site (15 min.) introduces audiences to SRS and to challenges met and those upcoming, namely the proposed production of plutonium pits (triggers for nuclear weapons) at SRS. Placing SRS in the context of U.S. nuclear weapons development more broadly, Tom Clements of SRS Watch, along with South Carolina activists Leslie Minard and Dave Matos, inform and inspire on the long road to nuclear disarmament, where the work is hard, but the reward is priceless.”

“Columbia Friends (Quakers in Columbia, SC) have led silent vigils and educational events for the last 30 years to remember the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to call for an end to nuclear proliferation. Collaborating with other groups in the area, Friends have organized hands-on, family friendly, and multisensory events open to the public at the South Carolina State Museum for the past two years; have worked with city officials to join Mayors for Peace and issue a Peace Proclamation (2019); and plan for the installation of peace poles in the city, along with other events, in the coming year.” – www.ColumbiaFriends.org; bit.ly/nonukessc
