Savannah River Site high-level nuclear waste tank closure has again slipped, as we have been warning for years. Environmental threats to South Carolina and Georgia to endure.
The new “Liquid Waste System Plan Revision 24.1,” sated April 22, 2026, contains the bad but totally expected bad news. This is just the way DOE operate – timelines always slip, especially as other projects, like chasing the $30 billion SRS Plutonium Bomb Plant, get our money.
According to a table on page 2 of the SRS Liquid Waste Plan, final tank closure has slipped from 2037 to 2041 – click on link to see it more clearly:
So, the biggest environmental threat in the state of South Carolina – the aging nuclear waste tanks – will be extended while other projects that threaten our state and the nation – building more nuclear bombs via processing plutonium in weapons’ pits (cores) at SRS – will continue.
The State of South Carolina must demand a binding legal agreement to fix the final tank closure date and that agreement should include that no more waste will be dumped into the tanks once DOE spent fuel now at SRS is processed via the aging HB-Line. Such an agreement would also mean no waste from cleaning out HB-Line, as part of production of the unneeded plutonium fuel (MOX), could go into the tanks.
