SRS Watch Files PEIS Comment on JASON Report Showing Plutonium Pit Aging NOT Impacting Nuclear Weapon Performance, Undermining NNSA’s Rush to Establish Rapid Plutonium Pit Manufacturing, August 13, 2026

SRSW · August 13, 2026 ·

Supplementary Comment on Draft Plutonium Pit PEIS (DOE/EIS-0573) & Attachments, by Tom Clements, Savannah River Site Watch, www.srswatch.org
Filed with NNSA on August 13, 2026
>>> We request that members of the public also file a comment based on the JASON “Plutonium Report” summary, to:  pitpeis@nnsa.doe.gov.
Attached, you will find is a supplementary comment filed into the draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) record. For legal and procedural reasons, this comment should be accepted though filed after the closure of the official comment period on July 16, 2026. This situation demonstrates that our request to extend the formal comment period for 30 days should have been granted and that this document and other requested documents should have been released well before the comment period ended.
In response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and a threatened lawsuit, DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) was forced to release a JASON group technical report “Executive Summary” on “Plutonium Aging” that does not support a rapid return to production of plutonium “pits” (weapons cores) for new nuclear warheads. This comment focuses on that new JASON report summary, which must be addressed in detail in the final PEIS.
Attached, you will find 4 documents

1. Comment by Tom Clements, August 13, 2026: Comment supplemental on draft PEIS Clements August 13 2026

3.  Totally and erroneously redacted summary of “Plutonium Aging” report (initial FOIA response): https://srswatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/JASON-Plutonium-Aging-Executive-Summary-Unclassified_Redacted-provided-July-15-2026.pdf
and

Please confirm receipt of this late-filed comment and attachments and that they will be include in the draft PEIS record.
I further request that other late-filed comments concerning the 2026 JASON Executive Summary on “Plutonium Aging ” be accepted into the record.  And, I renew my earlier request that the entire document be released and included in the record.
